Research for our Web Application – Design for Digital Media Environments 10/03/2015

Over the last few days I have posting on our wiki page about our groups progress. We have managed to build our student housemate finder and create a logo. I have been using my3schools to help me get around HTML and CSS. I also created a logo for our website:

I designed it using Inkscape. I wanted to have the student theme in the logo along with the estate agent theme. I did some research and found a lot of estate agent logos and nothing really included the student aspect. I came across this logo, traced it on Inkscape and tweaked it so the colours were different. The previous image was a green/yellow colour but I changed this to a brown colour because I feel it fits our student/house theme better.

Here are some screenshots of our website and work files:

Research for Web Application 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

For the next part of my research I wanted to look at designing a logo for our website. I have decided to research estate agent websites and look at their logos.

Here are some logos I found which I like:

miixck.co.uk

miixck.co.uk

From looking at various logos, I think it is important to have a house image in our logo so it defines our website. In the second image, I like how the text flows into the roof of a house, I also like the cartoon like image in the third logo. They have used bold colours with a thick black outline making it simple. I think our logo will be straight to the point. We will design this using either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.

Website Name Brainstorm 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

So after my group decided on our website application which you can read here I wanted to come up with some name ideas. We are focusing our website on students so I did some research to find what was already on the market and found a few websites:

I want to include the word student into the name because it’s important to share we are advertising a website for students and not for others. As our website is also kind of an estate agent site, including pictures and information of houses, I want users to get the impression from the name that our website is what is says it is.

Here are a few of my ideas:

  • Student House and Mate Finder
  • Student Houses and Mates
  • Roommates for Students

We haven’t decided yet if our website will be focused locally, so in the Dorset/Bournemouth area or if it will be available across the UK.

Planning our Web Application – Design for Digital Media Environments

After meeting up with my group, we each presented our own ideas.
I had an idea of a student recipe website where students can select from the navigation menu:

  • How many people they want to cook for
  • A price range e.g. Under £5
  • Ingredients used
  • Cooking time

Here are some of the other ideas we had:

  1. My other team mates had ideas of creating a “house mate” website where anyone can create a profile of themselves and search for other people to find a house mate in their area. It would also be a property website as we would have to preview the houses as well as the profiles of the users.
  2. Another one of our ideas was the create a “where to go” application where users can search for things to do in Bournemouth. It would include local attractions, parks, shopping centres and places to eat.

We had many more ideas but those were just a few that really stood out to me. After thinking for quite a while, we all decided to create a website on a “House Finder for Students”. Obviously our target audience would be students from 18-25, targeting those who haven’t managed to get student accommodation. I personally know many people who didn’t get student accommodation and found it hard to find a house under private accommodation. This website will really help students and it means that users can choose who they want to live with as they will have their own profile with information and pictures.

My next blog post will be on designing layouts for our website.
