Wiki Post – Designing our Web Application – 07/03/2015

Our first task to complete is to create a post on our group wiki account. We have to explain our project concept and include what will be created, research and our group member roles.
We have decided to design a House Finder website, where users can find housemates and a house to live in. We have decided to aim our website at students in the South of England as we feel like it is not too broad but not too small of an area.

We will create a database where users will have a username and password, once this has been created they can then make a profile of themselves and search any town in the South to find a housemate and/or house.

There will be a tab in the navigation bar that allows users to submit room details. There will also be a search page where users can then refine a search to rooms and people that are relevant to them. An example of this could be searching for a housemate in Bournemouth, who is male, looking for a five bedroom house under the price of £350 pcm.

Contact will be allowed between email addresses of the users.

Luke has been designing the layout for the website using CSS and PHP in Brackets. Terry and I have been looking at colours and logos to use for our website. For this we researched estate agents and took elements from their pages e.g colours and themes used. We will all continue to work as a team, allowing each members input into our work.

Research for Web Application 05/03/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

Our group has finished our Meet The Team page, we still need to add in our last bibliography but aside that, we have completed it. This page will feature on our House Finder website for users to view a little bit about us individually.

You can access it here if you are connected to the Bournemouth University server: http://dakar.bournemouth.ac.uk/~tbridges/wiki/dokuwiki/doku.php

I have done some more research into estate agents and the colours they use for their logo. I mainly searched for estate agents in the South West region as that is where our website will be concentrated in. I have taken a screenshot of a few I found that used basic colours with bold text:

Your Move

Slades

Savills

Right Move Rightmove

I have started looking on colour palettes for some examples of bold colours to use, the examples I have shown all use soft, warming and pleasing colours so this is something I will be adding into our logo. Here are some example colours that I think would look good for our logo:

My next post will include drawings of a test logo and a bit of work using Inkscape to design the logo digitally.

Research for Web Application 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

Our group have decided that our website will focus on Universities in the South of England. We had ideas on focusing just on Bournemouth, the UK and the top 20 unis. The problem we found with the top 20 unis was that the can change around so it wouldn’t work for us. We found that having our website based across the UK would be too much of a large scale so in the end we decided to keep it within the area of just using South England Universities.

Some universities on that list are:

  • University of Bournemouth
  • University of Kent
  • University of Oxford
  • University of Surrey
  • University of Brighton
  • University of Portsmouth
  • Royal Holloway, University of London

For the next part of my research I wanted to look at designing a logo for our website. I have decided to research estate agent websites and look at their logos.

Here are some logos I found which I like:

miixck.co.uk

miixck.co.uk

From looking at various logos, I think it is important to have a house image in our logo so it defines our website. In the second image, I like how the text flows into the roof of a house, I also like the cartoon like image in the third logo. They have used bold colours with a thick black outline making it simple. I think our logo will be straight to the point. We will design this using either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.

CSS, HTML and Brackets Workshop 18/11/2014

In today’s workshop we downloaded a folder of images and a html document and were told to open them in Brackets. My lecturer had a website on his screen consisting of three paragraphs of text, with boarders, margins and a background image which we were told to create only given the basics. From previous workshops we knew how to create everything, although adding a background image was a challenge as we hadn’t been taught this yet.

To start off, I added in the images in the html after each paragraph of text. I then changed the width of the container and box to make sure the boxes were placed nicely in a row (I did this by adding a float:left). After this I added in the background image and then changed the colour of the boarders to white so they stood out. I then added in a header text box.

The whole point of this task was to learn about separating the design and content, so we knew if we wanted to change the design, we worked in CSS and if we wanted to change the content we worked in HTML.
Below is a screenshot of the finishing website although my lecturer wanted us to add a hover, I didn’t have time to fully complete this. I shall be re creating more websites like this to help get some more practice.

Below is a screenshot of what my CSS and HTML files looked like:

Overall I felt as if I learned a lot in today’s workshop. It was really useful to have some one-to-one help and work through it at my own pace and not rush it. I feel a lot more confident with the language used in Brackets and I will keep practicing this. I used a CSS Help sheet with terminology which I have linked below for download.
