Design for Digital Media Environments – Web Application

Our website is finally working and finished, here you can see what we have put and where. On the Home page we have our logo and the ‘let me search for a room’ and ‘let me post a room’. As you scroll down the page we have written how to upload a vacancy, searching for a room and how to create an account.

On our search tab, we have added a drop down menu of the main Universities in the South of England. Underneath the drop down menu, the search bar filters out all of the vacancies for the University.

And on our Account page, there is a log in form and underneath that there is a sign up form. We have left a message explaining to users to fill out every field.

Overall I am really happy with how our group worked together, we all contributed in our own ways, allowing each person to excel in their own strengths. I feel like this task tested my weaknesses as I didn’t have a strong understanding of PHP and CSS and after practicing with this task I now feel more confident with them. I enjoyed both intellectual and creative parts of this task, my ability is most strong in the creative side of this degree so I found the PHP and CSS difficult but satisfying at the end.

At the start of this project I wasn’t very strong at the technology side, getting to grips with the Dakar Database, Git Hub and our Wiki Page however I soon found out that practice can (almost) make perfect, I tried hard to understand all components of this brief and I felt as if I have accomplished all parts in someway or another.

I felt our logo lacked something, having researched other estate agents websites i found that a lot of them has slogans and sayings:

homexperts Sunset Logo with slogan clean_136

I wanted to think of something to put underneath the logo that wasn’t too cheesy, just short and simple.

I had a few ideas to begin with:

  • Houses for Southerners
  • Southern Student seeking room
  • Student housemate finder
  • Student rooms

I wanted to include the words ‘student’ and ‘southern’ as they are what our website focuses on.
In the end I decided with ‘Student House Finder, Accommodation for Southern Students’. I felt this explained our website in one sentence and it had the words I wanted to include. I again kept the same brown colour to match our logo, keeping within our brown, green and white theme.

This is what our logo now looks like:

My next task within the group project was the design the signs we would use for our homepage. We had the text already written explaining how you can upload a vacancy, searching for a room and how to create an account. I used Inkcape for these designs and made a house, a magnifying glass and a silhouette of two people. When I was researching estate agent sites, they used basic images and colours so I decided to stick with that theme and kept the images plain and bold. As a group, we decided to make them the same brown colour as our logo so it was matching, I felt if we added too many different colours we wouldn’t have a theme throughout our website.

Before I had created these, the site was originally a light blue, after our group meeting we decided to change the background colour to green as we felt the green linked with the nature of our ‘Southern Students’ website. This wasn’t a problem and we fixed it quickly. We also remembered that shades of green were most among other estate agent websites so it turned out good in the end.

Our Wiki Account – Design for Digital Media Environments 16/03/2015

If you have read my previous post about our Wiki you will know that it is connected to my University server so you cannot access it if you’re not connected to it. I want to share with you our research and how we have been getting on so I thought I would screenshot some of the posts we have created.

Research for our Web Application – Design for Digital Media Environments 10/03/2015

Over the last few days I have posting on our wiki page about our groups progress. We have managed to build our student housemate finder and create a logo. I have been using my3schools to help me get around HTML and CSS. I also created a logo for our website:

I designed it using Inkscape. I wanted to have the student theme in the logo along with the estate agent theme. I did some research and found a lot of estate agent logos and nothing really included the student aspect. I came across this logo, traced it on Inkscape and tweaked it so the colours were different. The previous image was a green/yellow colour but I changed this to a brown colour because I feel it fits our student/house theme better.

Here are some screenshots of our website and work files:

Wiki Post – Designing our Web Application – 07/03/2015

Our first task to complete is to create a post on our group wiki account. We have to explain our project concept and include what will be created, research and our group member roles.
We have decided to design a House Finder website, where users can find housemates and a house to live in. We have decided to aim our website at students in the South of England as we feel like it is not too broad but not too small of an area.

We will create a database where users will have a username and password, once this has been created they can then make a profile of themselves and search any town in the South to find a housemate and/or house.

There will be a tab in the navigation bar that allows users to submit room details. There will also be a search page where users can then refine a search to rooms and people that are relevant to them. An example of this could be searching for a housemate in Bournemouth, who is male, looking for a five bedroom house under the price of £350 pcm.

Contact will be allowed between email addresses of the users.

Luke has been designing the layout for the website using CSS and PHP in Brackets. Terry and I have been looking at colours and logos to use for our website. For this we researched estate agents and took elements from their pages e.g colours and themes used. We will all continue to work as a team, allowing each members input into our work.

Research for Web Application 05/03/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

Our group has finished our Meet The Team page, we still need to add in our last bibliography but aside that, we have completed it. This page will feature on our House Finder website for users to view a little bit about us individually.

I have done some more research into estate agents and the colours they use for their logo. I mainly searched for estate agents in the South West region as that is where our website will be concentrated in. I have taken a screenshot of a few I found that used basic colours with bold text:

I have started looking on colour palettes for some examples of bold colours to use, the examples I have shown all use soft, warming and pleasing colours so this is something I will be adding into our logo. Here are some example colours that I think would look good for our logo:

My next post will include drawings of a test logo and a bit of work using Inkscape to design the logo digitally.
