If you have read my previous post about our Wiki you will know that it is connected to my University server so you cannot access it if you’re not connected to it. I want to share with you our research and how we have been getting on so I thought I would screenshot some of the posts we have created.
Over the last few days I have posting on our wiki page about our groups progress. We have managed to build our student housemate finder and create a logo. I have been using my3schools to help me get around HTML and CSS. I also created a logo for our website:
I designed it using Inkscape. I wanted to have the student theme in the logo along with the estate agent theme. I did some research and found a lot of estate agent logos and nothing really included the student aspect. I came across this logo, traced it on Inkscape and tweaked it so the colours were different. The previous image was a green/yellow colour but I changed this to a brown colour because I feel it fits our student/house theme better.
Here are some screenshots of our website and work files:
Our first task to complete is to create a post on our group wiki account. We have to explain our project concept and include what will be created, research and our group member roles.
We have decided to design a House Finder website, where users can find housemates and a house to live in. We have decided to aim our website at students in the South of England as we feel like it is not too broad but not too small of an area.
We will create a database where users will have a username and password, once this has been created they can then make a profile of themselves and search any town in the South to find a housemate and/or house.
There will be a tab in the navigation bar that allows users to submit room details. There will also be a search page where users can then refine a search to rooms and people that are relevant to them. An example of this could be searching for a housemate in Bournemouth, who is male, looking for a five bedroom house under the price of £350 pcm.
Contact will be allowed between email addresses of the users.
Luke has been designing the layout for the website using CSS and PHP in Brackets. Terry and I have been looking at colours and logos to use for our website. For this we researched estate agents and took elements from their pages e.g colours and themes used. We will all continue to work as a team, allowing each members input into our work.
Our group have decided that our website will focus on Universities in the South of England. We had ideas on focusing just on Bournemouth, the UK and the top 20 unis. The problem we found with the top 20 unis was that the can change around so it wouldn’t work for us. We found that having our website based across the UK would be too much of a large scale so in the end we decided to keep it within the area of just using South England Universities.
Some universities on that list are:
- University of Bournemouth
- University of Kent
- University of Oxford
- University of Surrey
- University of Brighton
- University of Portsmouth
- Royal Holloway, University of London
For the next part of my research I wanted to look at designing a logo for our website. I have decided to research estate agent websites and look at their logos.
Here are some logos I found which I like:
From looking at various logos, I think it is important to have a house image in our logo so it defines our website. In the second image, I like how the text flows into the roof of a house, I also like the cartoon like image in the third logo. They have used bold colours with a thick black outline making it simple. I think our logo will be straight to the point. We will design this using either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.
So after my group decided on our website application which you can read here I wanted to come up with some name ideas. We are focusing our website on students so I did some research to find what was already on the market and found a few websites:
I want to include the word student into the name because it’s important to share we are advertising a website for students and not for others. As our website is also kind of an estate agent site, including pictures and information of houses, I want users to get the impression from the name that our website is what is says it is.
Here are a few of my ideas:
- Student House and Mate Finder
- Student Houses and Mates
- Roommates for Students
We haven’t decided yet if our website will be focused locally, so in the Dorset/Bournemouth area or if it will be available across the UK.
For the week following my reading break I have to:
- Have met with your group and decided on a final project to work on.
- Post an item to your individual weblogs about your take on the idea with initial research using the system agreed on for this week.
- Post a page to the group wiki about the project idea with initial research.
You can look at my first research post here.
