Research for Web Application 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

Our group have decided that our website will focus on Universities in the South of England. We had ideas on focusing just on Bournemouth, the UK and the top 20 unis. The problem we found with the top 20 unis was that the can change around so it wouldn’t work for us. We found that having our website based across the UK would be too much of a large scale so in the end we decided to keep it within the area of just using South England Universities.

Some universities on that list are:

  • University of Bournemouth
  • University of Kent
  • University of Oxford
  • University of Surrey
  • University of Brighton
  • University of Portsmouth
  • Royal Holloway, University of London

Research for Web Application 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

For the next part of my research I wanted to look at designing a logo for our website. I have decided to research estate agent websites and look at their logos.

Here are some logos I found which I like:

miixck.co.uk

miixck.co.uk

From looking at various logos, I think it is important to have a house image in our logo so it defines our website. In the second image, I like how the text flows into the roof of a house, I also like the cartoon like image in the third logo. They have used bold colours with a thick black outline making it simple. I think our logo will be straight to the point. We will design this using either Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator.

Website Name Brainstorm 26/02/2015 – Design for Digital Media Environments

So after my group decided on our website application which you can read here I wanted to come up with some name ideas. We are focusing our website on students so I did some research to find what was already on the market and found a few websites:

I want to include the word student into the name because it’s important to share we are advertising a website for students and not for others. As our website is also kind of an estate agent site, including pictures and information of houses, I want users to get the impression from the name that our website is what is says it is.

Here are a few of my ideas:

  • Student House and Mate Finder
  • Student Houses and Mates
  • Roommates for Students

We haven’t decided yet if our website will be focused locally, so in the Dorset/Bournemouth area or if it will be available across the UK.

Group work for Design for Digital Media Environments

This is our first group work project of the year. I think working in groups for this task will work really well because each person will be set a signed role to complete. It will work efficiently as some of us are more confident with different aspects. For example, one of my team members is very confident in CSS and PHP so he can guide us with using it for our website.

We will anonymously peer assess our group so if someone isn’t putting in enough effort we can mention this. I think peer assessing is a really good for a group project because there’s nothing worse than someone not doing a lot of work and achieving a high mark!

I am confident my group will work together well, as we all seem confident and happy to put the effort in.

Designing a New Layout – Design for Digital Media Environments

My task from last week was to create a new development system which I will use for all of my future blog posts.

  • Use bullet points – to break down text
  • Ensure I caption each image/video/sound – So I and users know where I have got the material from
  • Allow each image to be 660px wide so it aligns with my text
  • Keep all of my text aligned left
  • Carry on using my categories and relevant tags, I will never leave a post with no category
  • I will also make sure I have the category name in the title of the relevant post
  • Use hyperlinks where I can
  • Make sure my Twitter account and Google+ account is linked up to each post
  • Make sure each task set is completed ON TIME

I have decided to keep the theme of my blog as I like the bright colours of the text, I also think my Instagram widget compliments the bright colours shown.

My Task for Next Week 24/02/2105

For the week following my reading break I have to:

  • Have met with your group and decided on a final project to work on.
  • Post an item to your individual weblogs about your take on the idea with initial research using the system agreed on for this week.
  • Post a page to the group wiki about the project idea with initial research.

You can look at my first research post here.

Planning our Web Application – Design for Digital Media Environments

After meeting up with my group, we each presented our own ideas.
I had an idea of a student recipe website where students can select from the navigation menu:

  • How many people they want to cook for
  • A price range e.g. Under £5
  • Ingredients used
  • Cooking time

Here are some of the other ideas we had:

  1. My other team mates had ideas of creating a “house mate” website where anyone can create a profile of themselves and search for other people to find a house mate in their area. It would also be a property website as we would have to preview the houses as well as the profiles of the users.
  2. Another one of our ideas was the create a “where to go” application where users can search for things to do in Bournemouth. It would include local attractions, parks, shopping centres and places to eat.

We had many more ideas but those were just a few that really stood out to me. After thinking for quite a while, we all decided to create a website on a “House Finder for Students”. Obviously our target audience would be students from 18-25, targeting those who haven’t managed to get student accommodation. I personally know many people who didn’t get student accommodation and found it hard to find a house under private accommodation. This website will really help students and it means that users can choose who they want to live with as they will have their own profile with information and pictures.

My next blog post will be on designing layouts for our website.
